Topstep vs Apex for NQ Scalpers: Drawdown, Fees, Payout Gates, Platform Fit (Sep 2026)
Ask AI volume this week was Topstep first, Apex second. If you scalp NQ/MNQ, ignore the 2025 brochure. Apex reset products after 1 Mar 2026. Topstep still splits Express vs Live. Sourced 4 Sep 2026.
Verdict
Pick Topstep if you want TopstepX, a known Express MLL, 90% split, and a path to Live daily payouts โ and you can live with a monthly Combine plus DLL on non-TopstepX platforms. Pick Apex new products if you want one-time fees, up to 20 accounts, 100% sim-funded requests, and a 5-trading-day payout cycle โ and you can trade a 50% consistency rule without blowing a good NQ morning.
Do not mix Apex legacy (pre-1 Mar 2026) with new products. Legacy is closed to new buys and Apex says those rules did not change retroactively.
Head to head
NQ scalper notes
A 50% consistency rule means one oversized open-drive cannot fund the week. If your edge is 10โ20 NQ points in the first hour, Apex new products force you to spread PnL. Topstep Express MLL is EOD-based on the highest end-of-day balance โ giving back after a green open still matters, but it is not the same as Apex 50%.
Fees: Apex one-time vs Topstep monthly. If you fail Combine twice, Topstepโs subscription hurts more. If you pass and stack, Apexโs 20-account cap is the scaling lever; Topstep caps Express at 5.
